Is there a way to tell the Simply Entry Tool to open by default in double whole note rather than quarter note?

When I launch my own copy of Finale, the Simple Entry Tool always opens by default in Eighth Note, rather than in Quarter Note.

I do not know of a way to change the default rhythmic value, sorry.

To get a specific rhythmic value I just hit the relevant number key.

To get a Double Whole Note, I just hit the number 8 key.

To get a Whole Note, I just hit the number 7 key.

To get a Half Note, I just hit the number 6 key.

&c.

For some reason, for me it is option-number.

I think it's Option (or Alt) + QWERTY number, but just plain keypad number.

I, too, get eighth note as default.

On Windows, you can set up a Keyboard shortcut to start on a Whole note (shown below), but I guess the Mac version doesn't have anything similar. Perhaps FinaleScript? Or "Keyboard Maestro"?

I used the Mac keyboard shortcuts until I switched to Keyboard Maestro. Either way, you can set up to open on your desired duration.

As the first note of any piece that I'm going to enter could be anything, I'm OK with pressing a button to set the value, as I do for all other notes in the piece.

Agreed. But I couldn’t find a way to select the Simple Entry tool without choosing a default duration. And even if you could, you’d have to choose a duration anyway.
