When converting a "condensed" full score (one where a single staff represents multiple wood/brasswind players) to a score in which each player is broken out into individual staves, what is the convention or recommended practice on handling "a 2 (à 2)" indicators? Even though the music gets copied to the second player's staff, should the "a 2" indication still be used in one or both of the staves as just an informational designation? Or should it be removed? I was searching for guidance in Gould's excellent modern "bible" of notation and didn't see mention (past p. 527 where the common practice is outlined).

I would not use ‘a 2’ if the parts are on two separate staves.

Yeah, it's for the score only.

Yeah, it's for the score only.
So you would or wouldn't use this in the score when separating out instrumental parts?

If two instruments share a staff in the score, use Iº, IIº, and a2 as needed to make clear who's playing. You don't need them in the players' individual parts. I recommend looking at some published scores on IMSLP for a model.
