I can set measure regions so the 2nd movement (on p 36) starts on bar 1.
Then, days later it reverts to starting on m405!!
Is it me? I wonder as I check the settings (see screenshot).
Since they look oK I delete the regions and type in the same settings.
Now it works!
But then a few days later...
Is it me? Is this a known bug or am I doing something to mess it up?
...Sure enough, today it is this: although I reset my regions, the measure numbers fail to change at first, then change in the Score only and not in Scroll view. To get this far I tried this: "If a region already exists, try reselecting the numbering style or adjusting its parameters to see if it updates. "

It looks like you forgot to attach the screenshot.

Although a screenshot is useful information, it is better with an actual Finale document to examine.

We only need to examine the measure number regions.
Before you attach the Finale document, you can safely clear other items, such as notes, articulations, expressions, &c.

I suspect what might be going on is the difference between what Finale calls defined measure numbers and actual measure numbers. Defined are those you've set up with the measure number regions. Actual are the raw numbers running from 1 to the number of measures in your file. The measures displayed on the page--e.g., at the beginning of every system--will always be the defined measure numbers, and will start over at 1 in your new region. But the numbers shown in scroll view in the control at the bottom of the Finale window and along the top above your music can be the defined measure numbers or the actual measure numbers according to a setting in your Preferences.

Here you see that measure 9 is shown above the staff but 25 in the scroll view label. 9, in the second region, is the defined measure number and 25 is the actual measure number. This is because I've set the preference "Display actual measure numbers."

Now, if I instead use "Display defined measure numbers," I'll see this:

The numbers agree. (2:9 means measure 9 in region 2.)

Is that perhaps what's confusing you? Here's where the setting is in Preferences:

Thanks Peter and Motet for helping.

The setting HAD been wrong and the disparity between Scroll and Page view was fixed.

But that adds a question: WHy did it change, since I did not go to that page to change anything. In fact I never change that setting. Looking at prior versions of this piece and older Finale files I see the setting as I expect it to be - showing 2nd movement bar numbers in Scroll and Page view.

And...why did I save a correct file only to find this problem back when I next opened the file?
This happened several times, making me wonder if the program had a bug, the file was corrupted or I had a rapidly worsening neurological problem.

FInale techs subsequently told me this was a known problem... So I did not think, peter, you would want to see my file and work on it, especially as it is an intermittent problem and would take time to confirm a solution.

That setting (Display Actual/Define Measure Numbers) is not per-file but a program preference. But since it sounds like you didn't know about it, it's unlikely you knowingly changed it between closing and reopening the file, and I don't think there's a button or keystroke you could hit accidentally. If it happens again, try Reset All Preferences. You'll have to redo any preferences you've changed, but the reset sometimes clears up problems because there is other state date stored in the same file as the preferences and Finale is full of bugs.

I'm skeptical of that because I use measure regions heavily and have been using Finale full-time for twenty years. They might have misunderstood your question, or they were trying to get rid of you. There is a bug having to do with multiple measure number regions and unchecking "include in measure numbering." If you do that, then some things will only work right with Display Actual set.
