Some users will know that when MakeMusic ported ARIA Player to Apple Silicon on the Mac, they changed the version number to 2.0xx. However, they left Windows users on 1.959. (Although both are actually the same codebase.)

The ARIA engine always checks that the data it loads (e.g. saved VST plug-in state) is of a compatible version, and flags an error if the version number is too high. Thus, you could no longer load ARIA data from a Mac on Windows.

The ARIA Player (and VST/AU plug-ins) are just an interface wrapper around Plogue's ARIA Engine, which is used for several different audio players, including Plogue's own Sforzando player (which also plays Garritan libraries).

The latest version of Sforzando installs ARIA Engine 1.980, which allows the loading of VST saved states with a higher version number in ARIA Player. So Mac and PC users will still be able to share files.

TL;DR: If cross-platform compatibility is important to you, then you may want to install Sforzando, in order to give ARIA Player the latest engine. Updates to the ARIA Engine from Plogue are likely to be the only updates for ARIA Player from now on...

Note: you don't have to use Sforzando: installing it just updates components that are used by ARIA Player.

There is now another update (1.981), which fixes some issues with CFX instruments. Hurrah for the continuing development of software!
