I’ve been talking to some producer IT people about potential virtual machines that can run a DAW and one recommended a system called Synology. How are we doing on finding an ideal VM for Finale? I did contact PEAKWARE’s MakeMusic Support Team but nothing yet, unless it got buried in the inbox

The IT systems builder says Synology is a self-contained OS built like a tank, which, I guess would be a VM surrogate built to last.

First I heard of it, just throwing it out there. At this time, no promises from PEAKWARE to keep Finale supported in perpetuity. “Indefinitely” is not the same thing, and when it’s life or death, not good enough

I am definitely not an expert on this but:
Synology is a Taiwanese head-quartered company that is known for its Network Attached Storage (NAS) and it runs their version of Linux on the boxes. This OS is called DiskStation Manager (DSM). It can be loaded with other applications to do various things but I wouldn't really call it a general purpose computer in the usual sense. Apparently it can create virtual machines.
A problem with VMs is that they emulate hardware and while they've done well in typical personal computer tasks - such as office type applications, they can have problems with things like sound, fancy video, and this could be a problem with a DAW or even a notation program.
IMO, the Synology solution is way too specific since, AFAIK, it requires the Synology devices.
I think you are best to approach it from what VM solutions will handle the DAW and anything related to notation and then see where that takes you regarding a host OS. Remember, your quest to prop up Finale requires BOTH a PC and an Apple solution.
